District Heights resident Chanos Monroe - also known as "Chanos Gillis" - pleaded guilty on Oct. 11 to a pair of charges in connection to the 2022 murder of Keith Sistare, 52, at a BP gas station in Northeast DC.
According to prosecutors, Monroe and a second man chased down Sistare in late July 2022 after he attempted to get in the driver's seat of his vehicle, which was left idling outside of the gas station with his fiancé still sitting in the front seat.
Video from the station showed Monroe repeatedly stomping Sistare's head while he was lying prone on the ground. Monroe then went back to his vehicle and grabbed a gun, but his fiancé convinced him to come back to the car.
Sistare was hospitalized and died on Sept. 11, 2022 as a result of his injuries.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Maryland conducted an autopsy, and it was determined his death was a result of complications from blunt force injuries, and it was ruled a homicide.
Monroe pleaded guilty on Friday to voluntary manslaughter and unlawful possession of a firearm with a prior felony conviction.
He has been in custody since his arrested in June this year.
As part of his plea, Monroe is expected to receive a 14-year prison sentence, followed by five years of supervised release.
